MASON, NH — A local community is in mourning following a fatal snowmobile crash early Sunday morning that claimed the life of Dejay Ducharme, 37, of Mason, New Hampshire.
The crash occurred around 2:14 a.m. near 472 Old County Road, where authorities say Ducharme’s snowmobile veered off the roadway and struck a tree at high speed.
First responders — including Mason Police, Fire and EMS, Brookline Ambulance Service, and New Hampshire State Police Troopers — rushed to the scene after reports of a serious crash with CPR in progress. Despite immediate efforts to resuscitate him, Ducharme was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
A Quiet Night Turned Tragic
According to preliminary findings from the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department, Ducharme was operating his snowmobile along Old County Road when he lost control, left the roadway, and collided with a tree.
Officials indicated that speed and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors in the crash. It was also confirmed that Ducharme was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, and that he was operating the snowmobile on a public way, which is prohibited under New Hampshire law.
An Ongoing Investigation
Conservation Officers continue to investigate the incident to determine the full circumstances surrounding the crash. No other vehicles or individuals were involved.
“This is a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly things can go wrong,” said one official on the scene. “We urge riders to operate responsibly, always wear a helmet, and avoid riding on roadways not intended for snowmobiles.”

Friends and neighbors in Mason are grappling with the sudden loss of Ducharme, described by those who knew him as “a hardworking, kind-hearted person who loved the outdoors.”
“He grew up here. Everyone knew Dejay,” said one Mason resident. “It’s just so sad — it didn’t have to end like this.”
Local officials and first responders expressed their condolences to Ducharme’s family and loved ones, many of whom have already begun placing flowers and notes near the crash site.
