ELKRIDGE, Md. – A terrifying scene unfolded during Friday morning’s rush hour in Howard County, as a tractor-trailer overturned in the median of Interstate 95 near Montgomery Road in Elkridge, snarling traffic and sparking a large emergency response.
According to Maryland Department of Transportation and live CHART traffic camera footage, the crash occurred around 7:30 a.m. between the exits for I-895 and Maryland Route 100. The massive vehicle lay sprawled on its side in the grassy median, forcing the closure of the two left lanes in both directions.
Miraculously, no serious injuries have been reported at this time, but the incident caused widespread disruption to thousands of commuters. Southbound delays stretched all the way to the Baltimore Beltway in Arbutus, with travel times ballooning up to 51 minutes for drivers headed toward the Capital Beltway. Northbound traffic was also heavily impacted, particularly near Maryland Route 175.
Emergency crews worked for hours to stabilize and remove the overturned vehicle. By noon, the truck had been cleared from the median, though crews remained on scene addressing debris and fluid leakage. Cleanup efforts continued until around 1:12 p.m., when all southbound lanes were finally reopened.
This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by truck drivers and commuters alike, especially during peak travel hours.
