Tybee Island Mourns Loss of HR Director Jamie Spear After Tragic Highway 80 Crash

TYBEE ISLAND, GA — The City of Tybee Island is mourning the heartbreaking loss of its longtime Human Resources Director, Jamie Spear, who tragically lost her life in a multi-vehicle accident on Highway 80 late Sunday afternoon.

Authorities confirmed that the crash occurred near Lazaretto Creek Bridge shortly before 5 p.m., involving three vehicles. Emergency services responded swiftly, but despite their efforts, Jamie Spear was pronounced dead at the scene. Several others sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals. The Georgia State Patrol is currently investigating the cause of the collision.

Jamie Spear, 48, had served the City of Tybee Island for more than a decade, becoming a beloved figure within the local government and community. Known for her compassion, leadership, and deep commitment to public service, Spear played a pivotal role in shaping the city’s workforce culture and supporting hundreds of city employees.

“She wasn’t just a colleague — she was family,” said Tybee Island Mayor Shirley Sessions. “Jamie brought warmth and wisdom to every room she entered. Her loss is immeasurable.”

City offices will be closed Tuesday to honor her memory, and grief counselors have been made available to municipal staff.

A memorial service is being planned by the Spear family and will be open to the public. Details will be announced in the coming days.

Jamie is survived by her two children, a sister, and her parents. The entire community extends its deepest condolences to her loved ones during this time of profound sorrow.
