Tragedy on the Colorado River: Two Friends Drown Near Topock Gorge in Heartbreaking Accident

Kingston Community Grieves the Loss of 34-Year-Old Ryan D. Budd

Topock Gorge, AZ-What began as a sun-soaked afternoon of fun and relaxation ended in heartbreaking loss along the banks of the Colorado River Sunday, when two men—both just 32 years old—drowned near Topock Gorge. Authorities have identified the victims as Anoop Gankidi of Tempe, Arizona, and Venkata Mukkaala of Milpitas, California.

The two friends were part of a group of five who had rented a pontoon boat for a weekend outing. After anchoring at a beach along the river, the group entered the water to cool off. But a joyful swim quickly turned into a desperate fight for life when three of the five men suddenly began struggling in deeper water. Only one made it back to safety.

At approximately 2:15 p.m., a frantic boater flagged down another vessel to report two men had gone underwater and never resurfaced. Deputies with the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department (SBCSD) responded swiftly, deploying divers and emergency personnel to the scene.

Despite courageous rescue efforts and exhaustive attempts at resuscitation, both Gankidi and Mukkaala were pronounced dead after being transported to the Colorado River Medical Center in Needles, California.

Officials say the victims had likely been submerged for nearly 20 minutes before being located. The water in the area, while appearing calm, is known to have sudden drop-offs and deceptive currents. Investigators do not believe impairment played a role in the incident.

“This is a devastating loss,” said a spokesperson for MCSO. “Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the victims. The responders did everything they could. It’s just a heartbreaking tragedy.”

Family, friends, and co-workers are now mourning the sudden and tragic loss of two young men, remembered as kind-hearted, driven, and full of life. Vigils are being planned in both Tempe and Milpitas, where grief has quickly rippled through the communities they called home.

As authorities continue to investigate the precise circumstances of the drowning, they are also issuing a renewed call for caution: wear life jackets, remain alert, and never underestimate the unpredictable dangers of natural waters—even on the brightest of days.

Two lives gone in an instant. Two families shattered. A day meant for joy will now be remembered in sorrow
