Danny Harrison Obituary: Cause Of Death-Tragedy on the Water, 71-Year-Old Lake Charles Louisiana Man Killed in Boating Accident; LDWF Investigating

Lake Charles, LA — A day on the water ended in heartbreak as the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) confirms it is investigating a fatal boating accident that claimed the life of Danny Harrison, 71, of Lake Charles. The incident occurred Saturday, June 8, in Jefferson Davis Parish.

According to preliminary reports, Harrison was operating a small vessel when it struck a submerged object, causing him to be ejected into the water. The vessel, still in motion and unmanned, circled back and struck Harrison with the propeller, inflicting fatal injuries.

Harrison was reportedly wearing a personal flotation device (PFD) at the time of the accident, but authorities noted he was not using a kill switch lanyard — a crucial safety mechanism designed to shut off the engine automatically if the operator is thrown overboard. Louisiana law requires use of a kill switch on vessels under 26 feet with tiller-operated motors exceeding 10 horsepower.

“This is a tragic reminder of how quickly things can go wrong on the water,” said LDWF in a statement. “Our hearts are with Mr. Harrison’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

LDWF enforcement agents responded to the scene and are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident. An autopsy has been ordered as part of the official inquiry.

Harrison was known in the Lake Charles community as an avid outdoorsman and respected local figure. Friends and neighbors have begun expressing condolences, remembering him as kind-hearted, experienced on the water, and always willing to lend a hand.

The LDWF is once again urging boaters to review safety protocols and ensure they are using all legally required and life-saving equipment. While life jackets remain critical, officials stress that kill switch lanyards are equally essential in preventing runaway boat incidents like this one.

As the summer boating season continues, this tragedy casts a sobering light on the importance of preparedness and vigilance on Louisiana’s waterways.

Further details will be released as the investigation develops.

Danny Harrison is survived by his family, friends, and a community that now grieves the sudden loss of a life lived close to the water he loved.
