Halifax, NS — It is with profound sadness that we share the sudden and heartbreaking passing of Joel Nicholas Hodder, a beloved son, brother, and friend to many, who died at the age of 24.
Born on March 10, 2001, at Halifax’s Grace Maternity Hospital, Joel’s life was a vibrant thread woven through the lives of those who knew him. The son of Colleen Graham and Sandy Hodder, Joel radiated kindness, curiosity, and a deep passion for life that left a lasting impact on everyone he met.
For the past five years, Joel found joy and fulfillment working as a marine service technician apprentice at Shining Waters Marina in St. Margaret’s Bay. His dedication to his craft was recently recognized in a feature by the Nova Scotia Boatbuilders Association, a moment of pride for Joel and his family. He was passionate about his work, frequently speaking with admiration for his colleagues and the many travelers who passed through the marina’s docks.
Joel’s soul was adventurous, and his smile—wide, sincere, and impossible to forget—was his signature. Whether hiking the highlands of Cape Breton, skateboarding through town, or camping under starlit skies, Joel embraced life with open arms. His travels took him across Canada, to Cuba, Mexico, and the United States, always in search of experience, laughter, and connection.
A music lover, Joel cherished live shows and recently traveled with friends to Maine to attend a concert—one of many joyful memories in a life marked by spontaneous road trips and unforgettable friendships.
Joel leaves behind his devoted mother Colleen, father Sandy, and cherished brother Graham. He is also lovingly remembered by Colleen’s partner Gerard and his children Mitchil, Chelsea, and Travis, as well as Sandy’s partner Lisa and her daughter Bria. Many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends now mourn a young man whose light burned bright and far too briefly.
Visitation will be held Thursday, July 10, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Atlantic Funeral Home, Oakridge Chapel (1110 Old Sackville Rd., Middle Sackville). A celebration of Joel’s life will take place on Friday, July 11, at 2:00 p.m. at the same location.
In every crashing wave, every mountain path, and every familiar chord of a favorite song, Joel’s spirit will live on. His joy was a gift to this world—and one we will never forget.
Rest easy, Joel. Until we meet again
