Rodeo World Mourns the Unexpected Loss of Joni James Smith, Miss Rodeo America 1990”

The rodeo community is grieving the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Joni James Smith, a beloved figure and tireless ambassador, who passed away unexpectedly this morning. Joni, crowned Miss Rodeo America in 1990, was known not only for her grace and poise but also for her lifelong dedication to the rodeo lifestyle and the sport she loved.

Joni’s remarkable journey began as a standout athlete and cowgirl. She earned the title of Idaho High School Rodeo Association All-Around Cowgirl in 1984 and balanced her athletic pursuits with academic excellence, receiving a basketball scholarship to Boise State University, where she was crowned Miss College Rodeo in 1987. She later earned a master’s degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

Her crowning as Miss Rodeo America echoed a family legacy, following in the footsteps of her mother, Karen Lavens James, who held the same title in 1962. Joni dominated the 1990 pageant, winning multiple categories including horsemanship, speech, appearance, and personality.

Beyond the spotlight, Joni was a devoted wife to 1998 World Champion Steer Wrestler Mike Smith and a loving mother to their four children — Callen, Naomi, Cole, and Nykell. She was admired in the rodeo community as an all-around cowgirl and fitness enthusiast, maintaining her rigorous regimen well into her final days. Reports say she ran five miles just last Monday before suddenly falling ill, leaving loved ones stunned by her swift passing.

The rodeo family’s hearts are heavy with loss, especially those close to Mike Smith, who describe Joni as a vibrant, fearless spirit and a fierce supporter of her family and the sport.

As we send our deepest condolences and prayers to the Smith and James families, the rodeo world remembers Joni for her strength, grace, and unwavering dedication — a genuine beauty inside and out whose legacy will live on forever.

Rest in peace, Joni. Your spirit will forever ride with us.
