MATTOON, IL – The Mattoon community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Kallie Kemper, a 17-year-old 2025 high school graduate who tragically lost her life on Friday morning, June 13, in a freight train collision.

The incident occurred near a rail crossing just outside downtown Mattoon. Emergency services responded quickly, but Kallie was pronounced dead at the scene. Details surrounding the circumstances of the collision remain under investigation.

A Life of Promise, Gone Too Soon

Kallie had just graduated this spring—a milestone she achieved while working part-time at McDonald’s, a job she held with pride.
