MATTOON, IL – The Mattoon community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of Kallie Kemper, a 17-year-old 2025 high school graduate who tragically lost her life on Friday morning, June 13, in a freight train collision.
The incident occurred near a rail crossing just outside downtown Mattoon. Emergency services responded quickly, but Kallie was pronounced dead at the scene. Details surrounding the circumstances of the collision remain under investigation.
A Life of Promise, Gone Too Soon
Kallie had just graduated this spring—a milestone she achieved while working part-time at McDonald’s, a job she held with pride. Teachers and coworkers describe her as reliable, hardworking, and endlessly kind. Her peers remember her for her quick laugh, warmth, and the way she made people feel seen and valued.
“She was the kind of student who always gave 110%—whether it was school, work, or being a good friend,” said one teacher at Mattoon High School. “She had dreams, she had drive, and she had heart.”
Community in Shock and Mourning
